The Silent Threat Lurking in Australia’s Produce

A pressing concern has been quietly gaining momentum Down Under: the risk of Cyclospora outbreaks in Australia. This parasite, notorious for causing explosive diarrhea, has already wreaked havoc on 34 US states, infecting over 1,600 people. The prospect of this pathogen spreading to Australian shores is a stark reminder that complacency can be a deadly sin when it comes to public health.

According to Professor Shokoofeh Shamsi, an expert in parasitology from Charles Sturt University, Australia’s geographical isolation provides a false sense of security. While it may take time for pathogens like Cyclospora to reach the continent via imported produce or infected travelers, the consequences can be devastating if we underestimate the risk.

The lack of training and research focused on parasitic diseases is a major obstacle in detecting and controlling Cyclospora outbreaks. In Australia, medical doctors often diagnose gastrointestinal illnesses as bacterial or viral infections, overlooking the possibility of parasites altogether. Shamsi notes that there’s no obligation to report cases of Cyclosporiasis, which exacerbates the problem.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry is monitoring the US outbreak, but with an alarming lack of urgency. Given Australia’s reliance on imported produce, it’s imperative that we don’t wait for a disaster to strike before taking action. Our tight biosecurity measures provide some reassurance, but they’re no guarantee against the introduction of Cyclospora.

The 2010 Cyclospora outbreak on two cruise ships out of Fremantle serves as a cautionary tale. At least 73 people were confirmed to have contracted the parasite, with another 241 suspected cases. The investigation concluded that fresh produce brought aboard in Malaysia or Singapore was likely responsible. However, the lack of systematic surveying and follow-up research raises serious questions about Australia’s preparedness for such outbreaks.

The issue is compounded by a shortage of expertise in parasitology within the medical community. Shamsi notes that fewer experts are training as professors in this field than retiring, resulting in a shortage of researchers to answer critical questions about how well our medical system can respond to parasitic diseases.

This crisis has been brewing for years, with Australia losing research momentum on parasites like Cyclospora and Toxoplasma gondii. The latter is particularly concerning, given its brain-invading properties and estimated 1 in 3 infection rate among the population. The fact that it took over a year to diagnose an eight-centimetre python worm in a Canberra woman’s brain in 2022 highlights the systemic issues at play.

Australia needs to confront the reality of its vulnerability to parasitic diseases. To address this, we must rethink our approach to food safety and invest in research and training programs that tackle the complexities of parasite control. Our public health system must be equipped to detect and respond effectively to outbreaks before they spiral out of control.

The stakes are high, but so is the reward: by acknowledging the silent threat lurking in our produce and taking proactive steps to mitigate it, we can safeguard not only our own health but also that of our communities and economy. The time for complacency is over; it’s time to face the facts and take action.
