China’s remarkable rise to technological prominence has been built on catching up with Western scientific advances, not leading the pack. Lu’s criticism is aimed at the rigid metrics-driven system dominating China’s research landscape. Scholars are forced to prioritize publication numbers over genuine innovation, stifling creativity and focusing on incremental rather than revolutionary progress. This approach has worked for decades but is becoming less viable in today’s fast-paced tech environment.

As one scholar noted anonymously, “We’re at a stage where people are more concerned with getting published in the right journals than actually making breakthroughs.” The emphasis on metrics has created a culture of risk-averse scientists who play it safe rather than pushing boundaries. China’s scientific community lacks neither talent nor vision – but its ability to innovate and adapt is being stifled by an overemphasis on quantifiable results.
